The extreem Windchill warning for our area continues. The only consolation is that we have far more snow on the ground than Winnipeg. All you snowmobilers out there. Take your vehicles up to the Lake!

I also like Winter though. I guess you have to, if you want to spend any kind of time in Manitoba.
I made a few pictures of Winter in Hillside Beach, so you can maybe understand why I like it.
I was surprised to see the first people ice fishing on the Red River just past Selkirk Manitoba. I hadn’t thought that the ice was thick enough yet.
I’ve tried to keep this blog focussed on issues that have to do with our local area, but this just bugs me too much!
Mr. Helmut Oberlander was found guilty today of of making a false statement on his application for Canadian citizenship in 1954. I believe 95% of the people who will read this were not even born back then.
Now the price for a barrel of crude oil has gone down below $ 100 – that’s almost 50% down from its peak. The price for gasoline went up by almost 15 cents overnight!
OK, I finally found the answer:
First it was tomatoes from the States with salmonella, then salmonella in Cilantro now its listeriosis in meat products! This last food scare is the worst yet. Quite a few people have actually died from food poisoning and the resulting infection.
The problem seems to originate from a Maple Leaf processing plant in Toronto.
Now is also the perfect time to go blueberry picking and huckleberry picking along the Beaches of Lake Winnipeg.
Blueberries and Huckleberries are basically the same thing though some say the real Huckleberry has larger seeds, making it more difficult to eat.
Chanterelle. Unlike other mushrooms Chanterelle are easy to recognise. They are bright yellow, and grow in a funnel shape.
A good place to go Chanterelle picking is Elk Island this time of year.
