Gimli Manitoba was host to the Islendingadagurinn last weekend, which was celebrated for the 119th time this year. The Icelandic Festival in Gimli found a sad conclusion though.

A 29 year old man was fatally injured in what was called an altercation on Third Avenue about 3 a.m. Sunday, leaving him laying there bloody and beaten.

The man died of his injuries after beeing taken to hospital in Winnipeg. RCMP have not released the cause of death, but a 17 year old was charged with manslaughter.

The historic festival had drawn thousands of visitors to the little community north of Winnipeg and was also attended by Iceland’s foreign minister Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir
